I posted last February about the wonderful work of
Elbridge Ayer Burbank. And while he is best remembered for his remarkable depictions of Native Americans, he also produced a handful of sensitive portraits of African American children.

I've had to clean up these images considerably to be able to post them here. Because, as photographed, the condition of most of these pieces is/was very poor. Whatever the cause, be it actual damage, mere neglect, or possibly as the result of improper techniques deployed by the artist, I hope they've subsequently been properly conserved. I think they deserve - for reasons both historical and aesthetic - to be seen at their best.

Des portraits d'enfants très bien rendus. Monsieur Burbank révèle en quelque sorte leur caractère et leurs âmes précieuses.

I cannot find any sources of where these now reside, particularly interested in the Shy Girl portrait. Do you have any more information? If so, please reply to artfab56@gmail.com. I'd greatly appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid I have no further information on these. Doing an image search, now, on "Shy Girl," I find a listing for it on the MutualArt site, and it appears it was last sold in December of 2019. It would take an upgrade in the subscription to get more detail on the sale; even then, I don't know that it would disclose the buyer. Sorry not to be of more help....
