Susannah Archer, Countess of Oxford, by Sir Thomas Lawrence, 1790
The Countess of Oxford (1728-1804) as portrayed by Lawrence in her sixty-third year. 1790 was also the year of her husband's death; though childless, the couple had had a marriage of thirty-nine years.
The UNTOLD GAZE is a large format fine art book - 11x11 inches hardbound, 160 pages, full color - a collection of almost ninety of Stephen's paintings paired with short fiction and poetry inspired by his work. Its a surprisingly honest portrait for its time. We are being allowed to see her years fully, which I admire and love about this.
