Study, study, work - Scène romaine / La Charité romaine, by Bouguereau, 1855

Oil and graphite study.
La Charité romaine, watercolor study.
Scène romaine, oil on canvas.

It's interesting to see how the painting began and finished, but I have to admit that I much prefer the study to the finished piece.

  1. I'm reflecting too deeply about the white cloth in the final version. I wonder if there was an intermediary study with the model "wearing" it. It doesn't seem like an afterthought or post-creation "cover up" in the final. (But my preference is the nude study for a variety of reasons.)
