Dorothy, Lady Dacre, by Anthony van Dyck, 1633

Dorothy, Lady Dacre (circa 1605 - 21 Apr 1698), the daughter of Dudley, 3rd Baron North, and Frances Brocket. At the age of nineteen or twenty, she married Richard Lennard, 13th Lord Dacre.  The couple was very happy, had a son, but in 1630, after just five years of marriage, Richard died.  This portrait was painted three years later, and she is still dressed in mourning.  In 1650, twenty years after the death of her first husband, she remarried, becoming Mrs. Chaloner Chute.
