12 / 12 / 2003

On December 12, 2003, Gigi sent me an email.  Our first contact.  She'd visited Portland and seen the art exhibition I had up at the time; her email was a sort of fan letter.  I emailed her back that same day.  And here we are, ten years later.  A decade.

I could sit here and try to conjure some beautiful, poetic words that would attempt to express my wonder and gratitude for the transformation of my life, for all that G has brought to me.  But they'd never be good enough.  So I'll just say thank you.  Thank you, my love.

And here's to as many more decades as life will allow us!

In case you didn't know, Rufus Wainwright is completely responsible for G and I being together.  If I hadn't seen him on Letterman (well, Jimmy Fallon subbing for Letterman and, anyway, a show I only very rarely watched) and been so impressed with his performance - "Who is that?" - that I bought his CDs and scouted out his website, then posted on his website message board that I was having an art show, and if G - in the midst of her own Rufus mania - hadn't seen that post and been desperate to find something fun to do while she happened to be visiting Portland, then, well, this whole thing never would have happened, never could have happened.  It was G's Aunt Kathy who introduced her to Rufus' music, and she was also who G was visiting when she went to see my show; she rates a lot of credit for this turn of events.  But then, of course, it was G who made the bold move and emailed me.  So she's the one who really gave the hand of fate a good shove.  Me, I just changed the dial to channel 6.

This is the - blessed - performance that got me where I am, where we are:

  1. Lovely, sweetie. I'm thankful for every minute of these odd ten years.

And - um - why didn't we get eight o'clock dinner reservations tonight?

  2. One never knows where events will lead! I too love Rufus Wainwright but nothing seems to have come out of it for me yet ;-) Happy Anniversary of sorts!

    1. Stefan, we met Rufus at a party a year or so after we got married. When we told him that it was his music that brought us together, he blurted out, snarkily, "Well, I'm glad it's working for someone!" Poor Rufus. Anyway, soon afterward he met his future husband, so we don't need to worry about him anymore. ; )

Now, as for you.... : )
