Un domestique fait la lecture à Madame Geoffrin by Hubert Robert, circa 1772



Hubert Robert (May 22, 1733, Paris – April 15, 1808, Paris), French painter best know for his landscape paintings and romantic depictions of ruins.  He is also important for influencing new trends in French landscape gardening at the end of the eighteenth century.

Madame Geoffrin (Marie Thérèse Rodet Geoffrin; June 26, 1699, Paris – October 6, 1777, Paris), considered one of the leading female figures in the French Enlightenment.  From 1750–1777, at her salon on the rue Saint-Honoré, she played hostess to the leading philosophers, artists, and politicians of her day.
