Brigitte Helm, 1934

Brigitte Helm, (March 17, 1906 – June 11, 1996), born Brigitte Eva Gisela Schittenhelm, was a German actress best known for her first film role, that of Maria and her double, the Maschinenmensch, in Fritz Lang's Metropolis.  In 1935 she made herself unpopular with the Nazi regime by marrying a man of Jewish descent.  She retired that same year and with her husband moved to Switzerland, where they raised a family and where she lived for the rest of her life.

  1. Wow, what a picture. Do you have any idea how old she is in this? Do I detect a hint of freckles in that face? She looks so different than Metropolis' Maria to me here. I love knowing that she lived to be ninety.

    1. Not very old. She retired in 1935 when she was about 29, so she'd have to be in her twenties, here. In Metropolis she seems devoid of make-up; here, she is überly made up. Fantastic.
