Sleeping Dog, by Gerrit Dou, 1650
Gerrit Dou (7 April 1613, Leiden – 9 February 1675, Leiden), sometimes Gerard, Douw or Dow, important painter of the Dutch Golden Age. He is best known for his genre scenes, his use of trompe l'oeil, and for night scenes lit only by candlelight.
