Dietrich travels

Marlene Dietrich on the deck of the Normandie, photographs by Martin Munkácsi, 1936.

Marlene Dietrich sailed to Europe on the Normandie in 1936, and Harper's Bazaar devoted a two-page spread to the event, titling it "Royal Progress on the Normandie".  She was photographed in her private suite, the Deauville, one of only four appartements de grand luxe, and on deck, surrounded by her really staggering amount of luggage.

  1. A daughter of the Prussian firmament. It means discipline was honed into her, as a child you control your thirst, control your hunger, control your emotions. But then there is that Berlin streak in her, a wildness, joie de vivre that all Berliners share, they say comes from the Berlin air. Just look here at Marlene, on the Normandie with reservations on the Deauville suite, 7 trunks,7 suitcases, a carry-on bag and dressed in furs and jewels. That Prussian discipline and the Berliner temperament served her well. - * Rj intheIE
