Mendel Levin Nathanson's Elder Daughters, Bella and Hanna, by Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, 1820



Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (January 2, 1783, Blåkrog – July 22, 1853, Copenhagen), Danish artist, launched the period in art that has come to be known as the "Golden Age of Danish Painting", and is often called the "Father of Danish Painting".

I think this double portrait is quite charming; the painting is equal parts stiff and tender.

(It is completely by coincidence that I chose this image to post on what is Eckersberg's 231st birthday.  Tillykke med fødselsdagen!)
