Princes Ernst and Eduard of Leiningen, with Islay and a macaw, by Sir William Ross, 1839

Watercolor on ivory, approx. 7.5 x 5.75 inches.

Prince Ernst Leopold Victor Carl August Joseph Emich (November 9, 1830, Amorbach – April 5, 1904, Amorbach) and Prince Eduard Friedrich Maximilian Johann (January 5, 1833, Amorbach – April 9, 1914) of Leiningen, German noblemen. They were the sons of Carl, 3rd Prince of Leiningen, who was the half-brother of Queen Victoria; the Duchess of Kent had a son and a daughter from her first marriage.

Islay was the Queen’s Skye terrier.
