When stars collide - off-duty encounters in old Hollywood

  1. LoL- that first photo.
JC - "Marlene, it was that BIG !"
MD - "Joan you must introduce me to this MANHOOD, I mean man !"
Seriously, a well curated photo series of the Golden Age of Hollywood and the STARS.
Photo 5 - Dietrich with the lovely Dolores Del Rio, so overlooked.
It was said that the great Hollywood photographers considered Dolores' face to be the most photogenic of all.
Photo 7 - Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, both terrific actresses and formidable ladies.
In 1947 Warner Brothers considered doing the film Ethan Frome, Joan wanted so much to do the film with Bette,
but Warners decided not to make the film. What could have been.
Photo 9 - Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda, polar opposites politically and also close friends.
Photo 10 - Bette Davis and Hattie McDaniel at the Hollywood Canteen for a Hollywood Victory Committee function. The HVC was segregated as was the US military. Bette was the only white performer to perform for black regiments in Hattie's HVC acting troupe. - And to think the vile poison of racism is still with us :(
Photo 17 - Hedy Lamarr and Loretta Young, two great beauties of their time. Thank Hedy for investing in an invention that in part swept us into the digital age.
Photo 20 - Edith Piaf and Marlene Dietrich, the french sparrow and the german legend were birds of a feather.
If France and Germany had gotten along as well as these ladies, there would never have been WW2.
Photo 24 - Marilyn Monroe and James Cagney two of the brightest stars in the galaxy that was Hollywood.
They say Marilyn had an affair with JFK and was murdered. I don't think Marilyn had an affair JFK; she was too gentle a person to run around with a married man with children and destroy another woman's marriage.
Marilyn herself came from a broken home and would never do anything to hurt children in that way.
Finally, Joan Crawford is in eight of the photos and did she get around ! So good to see JC with her dear friends Judy Garland and Cesar Romero (she could cut a rug with him on the dance floor). - Rj

    1. I ended up with a lot of MD and JC, didn't I? Probably should have gone for a little more variety, but I just went with what I had at the time.

As for photo 17, that's actually Joan Bennett with Loretta Young, though I can certainly see why one would think it's Lamarr. It's been said that the naturally blonde Bennett went brunette in imitation of the Austrian. Of course Piaf and MD were close friends, but in photo 20, that's Mary Martin with Dietrich.

  2. Is that Constance Bennett with Marlene Dietrich in the photo above Marilyn Monroe and James Cagney
