When one could travel on a zeppelin from Europe to America in 2 1/2 days, compared to an ocean liner
ReplyDeletethat would take 5 to 8 days. The cost was $450 for a zeppelin ticket in 1937 (about $9300 today)
The cost for an ocean liner was $535 first-class. ($11000 today on Queen Mary, Normandie, Europa, Rex)
The minimum wage in 1938 was 25 cents (about $5 today) My grandparents traveled cabin class on the
SS Washington of the United States Lines in 1937 for $380 for two to attend the Paris Worlds Fair and visit relatives in Europe. Granpa had Spanish relatives who lived in France due to the Spanish Civil War and granma
had Hungarian relatives, one brother lived in Germany, one lived in Austria and her extended family in Hungary.
In 1937 things were looking up, at least in America, by 1939 the war clouds.
