This early painting is a product of Eckersberg's two years in Paris studying with David. His master's influence is evident in the strongly dramatic pose and self-conscious Neoclassicism, but the modeling and, especially, the vivid flesh tones are quite beautiful.
Wow! The artist even managed to render the subtle natural variations of tone that occur over the body surface. Amazing stuff. This is part of why I admire painters so much, especially portraitists, yourself included, sir.
