Monsieur and Madame Joubert, by François-Xavier Fabre, 1787

Laurent-Nicolas de Joubert.  An amateur artist, himself, Fabre portrays him with portfolio and brushes.
Marie-Louise Poulletier de Perigny, Madame Joubert.

The twenty-one year old Fabre was a protégé of the Joubert family, who commissioned him to paint this pair of portraits to commemorate the couple's marriage, which had taken place on August 24, 1785.

The artist subtly indicates Joubert's facial scarring, no doubt a result of smallpox, the scourge of the age; Jenner's great discovery was nine years off.
Both portraits show the much more relaxed presentation of dress and pose that had become popular during the 1780s.
