Kate Vaughan as Lady Teazle in The School for Scandal, photographed by Downey, 1886

Kate Vaughan (1852? - 21 February 1903, Johannesburg), born Catherine Candelon or Candelin, English actress and dancer.  She made her stage debut in 1870, as a dancer, performing with her younger sister Susie.  A frequent attraction of the music-hall and burlesque theaters, poor health slowed her dancing career, but she went on to reinvent herself as a popular player in many of the classic British comedies.

In 1884, she married the Hon. Frederick Arthur Wellesley, the third son of Henry Richard Charles Wellesley, the first Earl Cowley, but the marriage was not a success, and they divorced in 1897.  She continued with her stage work, but her health continued to fail, and she died at about the age of fifty-one.
