Dick Ket (10 October 1902, Den Helder - 15 September 1940, Bennekom), Dutch painter noted for his still-lifes and self-portraits. He spent his childhood in Hoorn and then Ede before attending the Kunstoefening in Arnhem from 1922 to 1925. Born with a serious heart defect he was prevented from traveling by physical weakness as well as a host of personal phobias, and lived secluded in his parents' house in Bennekom after 1930. Exposed to contemporary art mainly through reproductions, his earliest paintings were impressionistic in style, but he was greatly influenced both by the art of the Neue Sachlichkeit and by early Netherlandish painting, and after 1929 he painted in a magic realist style. He completed approximately 140 paintings, including forty self-portraits. (As a result of his technical experimentation with different formulations and additives to the glaze medium, some of his paintings are not completely dry after six decades.) In his self-portraits the progressive symptoms of his physical deterioration are apparent, and his health worsened during the last decade of his life, leading to his early death at the age of thirty-seven.

Self-portrait, 1932.
