Woman at a Mirror, by Gerard ter Borch, circa 1652

In the collection of the Rijksmuseum, this beautiful, stunningly restrained and elegant painting was new to me.

  1. Thank you. ter Borch and the other mid 17th century Dutch artists were more interested in portraits and genre scenes than they were in big history- and drama-scenes. ter Borch's portrait of three people is full of quiet emotion, beautiful textiles and domestic confidence.

    1. Well said. One can almost - feel - the quiet, here. Or only the soft rustle of the beautiful satin gown.
