Three portraits by Roslin

Prince Vladimir Borisovich Golitsyn (1731 - 1798), 1762.
Cosme-Joseph de Beaupoil, comte de Saint-Aulaire (1741 - 1822), 1781.
Unknown Gentleman.

The details tell the tale of why I am such huge fan of Roslin's work:

The perfectly calculated rendering, here, of the silver braid and embroidery makes me swoon...!

  2. So delicate, so intricate, so realistic it's like an alternate world in the details. The gold embroidery has a light all its own. And the skin! Glowing, practically breathing, and the eyes wet. So alive!
